Since the very beginning of Best Bee Brothers, we’ve always focused on our founding principle: helping our customers protect their homes and families from carpenter bees, mosquitoes and other pests with effective products without harmful chemicals.
But as our company has grown, we realized there’s even more we can do, and we’re committed to BEE-ing Better (check out our sustainability statement). A key tenet of that commitment is making sure our products have as little a negative impact as possible on the environment. So while we love the durability of plastic, especially for the roofs of our best-selling Best Carpenter Bee Traps, we knew we had to find something that would stand up to the elements without harming the environment. The solution: ocean plastic!
What Is Recycled Ocean Plastic and Where Does It Come From?
Recycled or reclaimed ocean plastic is a post-consumer plastic material – think bottles, jars and other plastic “trash” – that’s removed from the waste stream. And while it’s called “ocean” plastic, it doesn’t necessarily always come from the sea. Instead, “ocean plastic” refers to plastic waste that is diverted or removed from fresh or salt water, including rivers and streams, as well as oceans. Our contract manufacturer has partnered with Oceanworks®, a company that collects, sorts, processes and authenticates ocean plastic as it travels throughout the chain of custody, meaning it’s tracked every step of the way. When Oceanworks® certifies the material’s authenticity and stamps it as Oceanworks Guaranteed®, customers know they’re receiving truly recycled plastic products from a company like Best Bee Brothers that’s doing its part to use more sustainable materials.
Packaging Changes
Using recycled ocean plastic in our products is just one part of our sustainability commitment at Best Bee Brothers. Packaging is another important piece, and when we examined our product offerings, we knew we could improve. As we phase out existing stock, all our new traps feature 100% post-consumer recycled packaging, meaning less virgin plastic is generated to make and pack our products and get them delivered safely to our customers.
